Located near Xishan Hill, in the western suburbs of Beijing, the 400-hectare Beijing Botanical Garden has a rain forest plants hall and a greenhouse for tropical plants and a hall for plants capable of catching small insects.
Built in 1956, the multi-purpose botanical garden is home to about 580,000 plants of 6,000 varieties.
The garden is encircled by mountains fully covered with pines, firs and maples. With beautiful plants from all over the world, there are gardens planted peony, rose, tulip, lilac, peach, bonsai, crabapple, conifer, magnolia, etc.
Wandering around in Beijing Botanical Garden is pleasant; it is even like fairyland in the early morning after raining. The air is so fresh you can walk through the gardens breathing the scent of grass and trees, feeling free and comfortable.
There are mainly 18 scenic sites in the Garden, including Tree-peony Garden, Autumn Garden, CAO'S Memorial, Penjing Garden, Lilac Garden, Liang's Tomb, Rose Garden, Magnolia, Arboretum, Conservatory (the biggest one in Asia), Cherry Valley, Temple Of Reclining Buddha, Education Center, Perennial Garden, Crabapple Garden, December 9th Pavilion, Herbaceous Peony Garden and Ornamental Peach Garden.
China is believed to keep the most species of lilac in the world. Lilac has long been considered to be the decorative plant. The Lilac Garden was first completed in the end of 1950s and then extended at the beginning of 1980s. 22 species of lilac are grown here at present. Flourishing flowers blooming springs and florescence may last 2 months because of the variety of. The area of the garden is 3.5 hectare.
The Rose Garden covers an area of 7 hectare and about 700 rose Cultivars are grown here. In the northern part is a formal garden with a hidden fountain and a cascade, where floribunda and climbing roses are grown. In the southern part with natural terrain, hybrid tea roses, miniature roses, antique roses and wild roses are exhibited along the pathway.
Magnolia, an ancient plant community, is a traditional ornamental plant in China. The Magnolia Garden was built in the end of 1950s,covering an area of 0.84 hectare. Among the varieties of magnolia grown here, Magnolia deundated and Magnolia leilira are the most precious ones. In the early springs, the flowers and the sweet scent enhance the beauty of the garden. The garden is neatly arranged with regular pond, flowerbed and carefully pruned hedge.
Perennial Garden is for perennial plants with an area of 1.44 hectare. About 60 species of perennial plant belonging to iris, amaryllis, Lily, Composite and Buttercup families are collected and cultivated here. Flowers keep blooming from spring to autumn. Some perennial plants, which are rarely found in northern China such as American Arbor-vitae, Red Japanese Maple, Hybrid Tulip Tree and Bamboos, are also grown in the garden.
Ornamental peach is Chinese traditional decorative plant. The Ornamental Peach Garden was completed at the beginning of 1980s,covering an area of 3.4 hectare. Red white and golden speckled peaches are collected and cultivated at present. Flowering plum, forsythia are also grown here. Cherries sent by Japanese friends can be found in the garden too. Rich multicolored flowers cover the entire hillside when florescence arrives.
