Wulingyuan Scenic Area, consisting of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Gully and Tianzi Mountain, possesses 369 square kilometers. The main land feature is quartzes sandstone that is rare in the world. It is a perfect combination of the beauty of Guilin, the queerness of Mt. Huangshan, the peril of Mt. Huashan and the magnificence of Mt. Tai. Pavilions, bridges, caves, lakes and waterfalls are everywhere. Consequently, it enjoys the name of 'an enlarged potted landscape', 'a miniature fairyland'. In 1992, Wulingyuan Nature Reserve was listed in the “World Natural Heritage” by UNESCO.
Located in the northwest of Wulingyuan, covering an area of 72,000 acres, Zhangjiajie is the first National Forest Park approved by the State Council in 1982. It is noted for its peculiar peaks, tranquil water and beautiful forests. Main scenic spots include Golden Whip Stream, Huangshi Fort, the Southern Heaven Gate, the Imperial Brush Peak and Seeing West Sea on the Heavenly Terrace.
Suoxiyu Valley is located in the center of Wulingyuan scenic zone. It covers an area of more than 180 square kilometers and is the largest one of the three zones. In the east of the area, there is a collection of caves that made of limestone. The most famous one is Yellow Dragon Cave, which is 13 km in length with stalactites in multifarious shapes, so-called ‘underground magic palace’.
