Overview of the Outer Eight Temples

From 1713 to 1780, Qing court built up 12 temples in the east, north and northeast of the Mountain Resort. Only seven of which remain intact today, reflecting the traditional art and culture of the Han, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan nationalities.

In the east of the resort are Puren Temple, Pushan Temple (no remain) and Guang Yuan Temple lie to Wulie River. In the north of the resort are Xumifushan Temple, Shuxiang Temple, Guang'an Temple (no remain) and Arhat Temple (no remain).

The outer Eight Temples are located around of the resort. They were constructed wonderfully and united ingeniously with the Mountain Resort, which formed the momentum of a myriad of stars surrounding the moon. That stands for the relationship and Qing court. In that historic situation, that comes to the purpose of 'to defend frontier, to unit hearts of inner side and outer side and to make the country stable 'and gets to the effect of 'One temple in Qing Dynasty was more powerful than thousands of soldiers'. The remaining inscriptions and cultural exchange among different nationalities at the beginning of Qing Dynasty showed the historical process of unity, consolidation and development of the multinational country.
