Siguniang (Four Girls) Mountains Scenic Area is situated in Xiaojin County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, northwest of Chengdu city. It was listed as the National Scenic Resort in 1994 and as the National Nature Reserve in 1996.
'Siguniang' is roughly translated to '4-girls mountains.' This is a new name given by Chinese. The original Tibetan name of the peaks was Kula Shidak, meaning abode of the mountain god. It was said by the local people that these four peaks were originally four beautiful sisters of the mountain god.
The highest peak in this area is Mount Fourth Girl. It encompassed 4 peaks perennially covered with snow soars high with maximum 6,250 m above sea level in the northwest of Western Sichuan Plain. Mount Fourth Girl is a knife edged rock peak. The other three peaks on the southern ridge stand side be side like four sisters at the end of the Qionglai Mountain Ranges on the Aba Plateau. These are called Third Girl (5,355m), Second Girl (5,276m) and First Girl (5,025m).
The area consists of Mt.Siguniang, Mt. Balang, Changping Gully, Haizi Gully and Shuangqiao Gully, covering an area of 2,000 sq. km. Near the main peak of Siguniang are several huge granite walls that are similar in size and beauty with the Torres Del Paine in Patagonia. One of these walls, directly across the valley from Siguniang, is a perfect granite pyramid called celestial peak. Americans first climbed this peak in the mid-1980s.
Mt. Balang stands 5,040 m above sea level between the Wolong Nature Reserve and Rilong Town of Xiaojin County. Here is the only way that must be passed leading up to Mt. Siguniang. The high mountain and deep gully is veiled in the boundless sea of clouds. A road runs zigzag up. Seeing all this, one feels as if he were in a fairyland.
Changping (Long Terrace) Gully is 29 km long with an area of 100 sq. km. In the gully, there are ancient cypress tress-lined roads, lamaseries, grotesque crags, waterfalls dashing for on high and other wonderful views.
Haizi (Lake) Gully is 19.2 km long with an area of 126.48 sq. km. The gulley contains a dozen plateau lakes, such as Multi-colored Lake, White Lake, Blue Lake, Yellow Lake. In these lakes, the water is so clear that one can see the button and briskly swimming fish. People feel completely relaxed and happy at the scene.
Shuangqiao( Double Bridges) Gully is 34.8 km long with an area of 216.6 sq. km. The gully is flat with brooks flowing crisscross murmuring.
The slopes are densely covered by primitive forest. Dozens of mountains including Mt. Wuse (five colors), Lieren (hunter) Peak thrust themselves towards the sky, some like rhinoceros looking at the moon, some like lion roaring, all with different postures and colors, presenting a likeness both in shape and spirit.
The Siguniang Mountain is honored as the queen of Sichuan's mountains, enjoying the fame with the king of Sichuan's mountains - Gongga Mountain of 7,556m-high.
