The Ancient Diaoyu Town (or Fishing City) covers an area of 2.94 square kilometers. Situated on a hill surrounded by water on three sides about five kilometers east of Hechuan County seat, it lies near the confluence of Qujiang, Fujiang and Jialing rivers. The terrain there is precipitous and the landscape is beautiful.
About seven hundred years ago, Yu Jian, the governor of Sichuan during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), built a fortress town to fight against the Mongols. Though the enemy led by Commander Mongka himself had more than ten thousand soldiers, yet, by relying on such a tiny fortress, Yu Jian won brilliant victories, while the Mongolian Commander Mongka and his vanguard General Wang Tege were killed in the war.
Mongka distinguished himself in battles and was then called 'the Whip of the God'. However, he was wounded in this battle and died on July 21, 1258. For this reason, Diaoyucheng is to the European and Asian historians as the Place Breaking Off the God's Whip.
Consisted of many historical sites, including the wharf for the navy forces, the thrilling ground, the watch towers and a fortification with built-in cannons, Diaoyucheng was designated by the State Council as one of the major national cultural and historic sites under State protection.
