Western medicines like aspirin, vitamins, and common cold remedies are available from drug stores in hotels and in the streets. Most drug stores do not require a doctor's prescription for ordinary medicines. You may try Chinese medicine which is specially effective for colds, coughs and other common ailments. 

Contraceptives are usually not available in hotels but they are cheap and you can buy them at drug stores and in the larger modern supermarkets and stores.
