| Chinese Medicine |
| Traditional Chinese medicine has a history
of more than 2500 years and is still popular in China though Western
medicine is practised in most hospitals. Traditional Chinese medicine
is effective in fighting various chronic diseases--even cancer. Treatment
with traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine run side-by-side
in many hospitals. Should you become ill, you might consider being
treated by a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese herbal
medicine the doctor prescribes, which often comes in big balls, may
not look that pleasant, but if it works, who cares? It's worth a try
if your Western medicine isn't producing results. |

| Acupuncture |
| Acupuncture, which has been around for
more than 4000 years, is regularly used in China to treat all sorts
of diseases. It has been approved by the WHO, and is now practised
in many countries. Don't let the long needles put you off, though
do check that needles used are sterile. At least there are no side
effects, as there are with so many medical drugs. |

| Medicine |
| Western medicines like aspirin, vitamins,
and common cold remedies are available from drug stores in hotels
and in the streets. Most drug stores do not require a doctor's prescription
for ordinary medicines. You may try Chinese medicine which is specially
effective for colds, coughs and other common ailments. |
| Contraceptives are usually not available
in hotels but they are cheap and you can buy them at drug stores and
in the larger modern supermarkets and stores. |
