The Horse-Tail Harbor at the exit of
the River Min is the gateway to Fuzhou, and had been a place
of strategic importance in history. It was garrisoned by the
troops of Zheng Chenggong, a national hero in the Ming Dynasty
(1368-1644), and two hundred years later Lin Zexu had artillery
fortresses built at the harbor as defense against assaults
by the enemy navy from the sea. " Now the harbor has been
made a zone of economic and technical development. The port
is accessible to 10,000-ton class steamers. Mawei Shipyard
is the largest in the province.
