It has been confirmed that Liede Bridge located in Pearl River New City, the 14th bridge crossing Guangzhou section of Pearl River in south China, will be a single-tower self-anchored suspension bridge.
At present, the first-phase preparation for construction has commenced. This bridge is the largest suspension bridge in China and the second largest one in the world.
According to the design scheme of this bridge, a 130-meter-tall cable tower will be built in a shell shape, with a main span of 219 meters. The bridge is able to withstand level six to seven typhoon. According to tourism source, this bridge's unique design and value of appreciation will make it a new tourist attraction for night tour in Guangzhou upon its completion.
The Liede Bridge scheduled to be completed in mid 2007 will start from Linjiang Road located in Pearl River New City, Guangzhou's new central business district, in the north and stretch to Yuejiang Road, the extension of Binjiangdong (Riverside) Road in the south.
It is part of the second-phase project of Xinguang Expressway. When the bridge is completed, it will take Guangzhou citizens less than 30 minutes to go from Tianhe District to Panyu via Liede Bridge and Xinguang Bridge of the Xinguang Expressway.
The bridge has a planned speed of 80 kilometers per hour and will cost 300 million yuan (US$36 million).
