Guangzhou's new railway passenger station, featuring modern and advanced management and facilities and with a budget up to 13 billion yuan, starts construction on Dec 30th. The station is to bring Guangdong's railway transportation into an age of high speed.
The railway station will become one of the four railway transport hubs of China and is said to be the largest in Asia after completion. It will include 20 rail lines and 10 platforms, and is estimated to have a passenger delivery volume of 80.14 million in the year 2020.
At the same time, construction of a Guangzhou-hub Pan PRD inter-city express railway network, planned earlier this year, is also launched with this new station as its hub.
After completion of the station and the related railway construction in 2008, passengers will have a brand new experience of high-speed railway travel from Guangzhou: To Zhuhai, 40 minutes; to Shaoguan city in north Guangdong, one hour; and to Wuhan in mid China, only 4 hours (Currently it takes 11 hours to travel to Wuhan by railway).
The new station, as a hinge of the transport network, will help fortify Guangzhou's status as the region hub and to keep it more closely with other PRD cities in Guangdong, such as Shenzhen, Foshan, and Jiangmen, and help PRD and Hong Kong, Macao to enhance their communication with midland China.
In 2004, a series of large projects such as the new Baiyun Airport have accelerated Guangzhou's development. This new station, which is chose to be built in Panyu district, will also greatly boost the development of the southern Guangzhou area and help expand the city's development space.
