Rain Closes Shipping on Li River

For the first time this year vessels are banned from the Li River, which runs through picturesque Guilin City, after torrential rain raised the water level to 146.36 meters, 1.36 meters above the danger mark, port administration officials said Sunday.

Pleasure boats are not permitted to operate on the river to ensure the safety of passengers and many people have claimed refunds on their tickets. A dock official said he is not sure whether or not river traffic will return to normal Monday.

The water level of all rivers in Guilin rose dramatically after heavy rain hit 12 counties of the city over the past few days. Therainfall in Yongfu County, a seriously affected area, exceeded 360mm. Officers and soldiers of the local armed police units have rushed to the areas to assist those in need.

Authorities concerned are following closely changes in the water level of the Li River and making preparations for immediate resumption of water traffic after the water level lowers.

According to the meteorological department, more rain is expected in most parts of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region andthe provinces of Guangdong, Hunan and Jiangxi in the next two days.
