The town of Xingping, with a history of more than 1300 years, is located on the east bank of the Li River, 63 kilometers from Guilin and 27 kilometers from Yangshuo. It is the largest town along the Li River since the ancient times as well as one of the four most famous ancient towns in Guangxi Province.
In the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589), Xingping was the seat of Xiping County. In 590, Xiping County was incorporated into Yangshuo County. The present Xingping remains under the domination of Yangshuo County.
The town is also an area where the best scenic sights along the Li River are to be found. It is well known for its limpid water, grotesque peaks, steep cliff and fantastic landscape. The Li River passes through the town with a length of 20 kilometers, in which Mural Hill, Snail Hill, Lotus Crag and Fishing Village are the most attractive spots along the entire Li River cruise. There are such enchanting scenes as 'Pretty Woman Looking in the Mirror', 'General Drawing His Sword' and 'Carp Drinking from the River'.
