  Louwailou Restaurant

The Louwailou (One Building Beyond Another) Restaurant, built in 1848, derives its name from the poetic line, 'There are green mountains beyond mountains, and buildings beyond buildings', and from the fact that the restaurant is situated outside the Yulou Chamber.

The restaurant picturesquely located with the West Lake in the front and the Solitary Hill in the back, made a name for itself for one of its dishes, West Lake Carp Stewed in Vinegar (Xi Hu Cu Yu). Lu Xun came to the restaurant twice for this dish. Premier Zhou Enlai visited the restaurant together with foreign guests on nine occasions.

West Lake Carp Stewed in Vinegar
This famous traditional dish in Hangzhou originated in the folk tale, 'Sister-in-Law and Brother's Treasure'. The carp, usually weighing 1.3 jin each, is first boiled in water and then stewed in a sweet and sour juice. The fish meat thus cooked is tender and has the flavour of crab.

Shrimp Meat with a Longjing Flavour
This is another famous dish of Hangzhou that is made by cooking the fresh shrimp meat together with tender tealeaves. The dish has a pleasant colour and a delicate and refreshing taste.
