Hong Kong Island - Exchange Square

Exchange Square lies near the waterfront to the west of the Star Ferry Pier and takes its name from the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, which occupies one of the square's modern high-rise towers.

The city's four separate exchanges were merged in 1986, the new single entity having taken its place with New York, London and Tokyo among the world's leading stock exchanges. The exchange moved to the square at the time of the merger, its new home the work of Swiss architect Remo Riva.

The square can seem a little austere and windswept at times - especially when empty of people - though the buildings are undeniably impressive. In good weather it's a nice place to sit and watch the world go by, especially at lunchtime, when local office workers throng its precincts. The fountains and statues, some by Henry Moore, are also appealing - the big bronze water buffaloes are particular favorites. Be sure to step inside No 1 Exchange Square to admire the architecture and stunning interior waterfalls.
