Mani Stone, called as Ya Ze in Tibetan area in Jiuzhaigou, is originated
from the belief of the Bön religion that everything in the
world has its own life. It is the representation of the piety to
the Mountain deity in the original Bön. religion. Ya Ze are
stones or various wooden weapons piled up at the appointed location
at the top of sacred mountains or along the mountain pass. Sutra
texts are inscribed on them and sutra streamers are set upon them
too.
The location of Ya Ze is set by Tulku or eminent monks according
to the location of sacred mountains and celestial bodies. Monks
or masters are in charge of the establishment of Ya Ze. It is believed
to have many benefits such as blessing for peace, stabilization
of villages, abundance of treasure, thriving and good health of
both human being and livestock and avoidance of tragedy. Some Ya
Ze are used as the dividing signal of two areas.
