Folk
songs can be classified into two: mountain folk songs and toasting
songs. For mountain folk songs, it is loud, sonorous and unconstrained,
which represents the characteristics of the nature of the broad
plateau and Tibetan lives. A toasting song is mainly sung during
feasts. No matter inside or outside the room, or even in picnics,
if there is wine, it can be sung. It has become a custom for Tibetans
to sing toasting songs in Jiuzhaigou. During drinking wine, the
singer from the invited group should start singing toasting songs.
Usually it is a solo but may also be a chorus with another singer.
After singing a song, all people in the feast should drink. At the
end of the feast, the first singer or a master in singers will sing
a closing song, which is called as Zaxi by Tibetans to finish the
feast.
The resource of arrow bamboo is abundant in Jiuzhaigou and therefore
musical instruments made in bamboo are very popular there. Bamboo
Flute is a musical instrument carried by young men and it is used
outdoors. Bamboo Harp, called by Tibetans as Zajian is a musical
instrument carried by women, which is usually a gift made by men.
It has a length of 8 cm with an exquisite bamboo shell outside.
There are also some delicate engraved patterns over it. Tibetan
women tie it to their necklace to carry it both as an ornament and
a musical instrument.
