The Sutra streamer is called as Geda by local Tibetans in Jiuzhaigou, which means a flag planted in front of the gate. Its length varies depending on its usage and texts over it. There are five colors in sutra streamers: blue, white, red, green and yellow, which represent blue sky, white cloud, red flame, green water and yellow soil respectively. They also represent the Five Elements: wood, metal, fire, water and earth.

Since the forests are rich in Jiuzhaigou, the mast of the sutra streamer is usually made of wood. It is usually very tall and planted upright. Few of them are hung horizontally.
