  Guanyinshan (Mt. Kwan-yin)

Located on the western bank of Dianchi Lake, Guanyinshan (Mt. Kwan-yin) is 34 kilometers away from Kunming. The top of the hill, with the altitude of  2040 meters, is one of the best places to enjoy the attractive scenery of the mountains in the distance and the blue Dianchi Lake beneath.

In the early Ming Dynasty, the roaring wind and surging waves caused many difficulties for ships sailing across the lake. When the ship reached the Big and Small Gulang Islets, it was stopped by strong wind. In order to change the situation, a temple was found to worship Kwan-yin Bodhisattva, praying the help from Kwan-yin Bodhisattva that can calm down the roaring wind and surging waves, hence the mount named as Guanyinshan (Mt. Kwan-yin). There were formerly a bronze statue of Kwan-yin Bodhisattva made in 1474 and a bronze bell in the temple, but they were no longer to be found.

On the 19th of the sixth month of every Chinese lunar year, thousands of people from different nationalities and places will gather here to participate in a large-scale ditty-guessing contest around the hill. The whole contest will last 3 days, with melodious folk songs echoing in the air from day and night. Various kinds of special local products, snacks and vegetarian food are sold to visitors and participants. The activity has become not only a traditional temple fair, but also a mirror of the minority's folk-custom in Kunming.
