Saga Dawa means the 4th month in Tibetan calendar.
Saga Dawa Festival is the most important religious festival for Tibetan Buddhist to commemorate Shakyamuni's Buddhahood and the death of his mortal body.
During the period of the festival, sutras are recited at every monastery and 'Cham' dances are performed. People will spend their late afternoon on picnic at the lakeside. It is said that good deeds in the month of this festival deserve 300 fold in return and this leads many people to donate large sums to the religious orders, monasteries and to the beggars that gather at this time of year.
Also known as the Festival for Releasing Living Things, during this festival, Tibetan people do not eat meat or kill any living things in the fourth month of the Tibetan year in order to concentrate their efforts on worshipping.
