Tibetan plateau, the roof of the world

The Tibetan plateau, 4000 meters above sea level on an average, is acclaimed as the roof of the world with the highest mountain ranges on the earth.

On the north, this 'sacred snow area' as it being called, is bounded by the Kunlun Mountains. To the south and west of the world famous Himalayas stand with its principle peak of Mount Everest called affectionately 'Mount Goddess' by the local people.

Between the two mountain ranges the Gang Te-se Mountains (Mt. Kailash) lie across the southwestern Tibet, which contains cliffs and crisscross glaciers of great momentum. Map ham Two (Lake Manasarowa) the biggest lake in the world, lies near the southeast side of the principle peak of Gang Te-se, Mount Riposte situated in Parings county in Nga'ris district.

Surrounded by the world's highest mountains, the Tibetan plateau commands characteristic scenery. The boundless prairie of North-Tibet is one of the three pastoral areas in China. The southwest part of Tibet, there is the extensive dense woodland regarded as important natural forest zone bordering on Yunnan's and Sichuang's woodland.

In summer the Prairie of North Tibet is just like a carpet of green grass bustling with youthful vigor. The cone-shaped tents, the thriving flocks and herds of fat, strong sheep and cattle, and the unrestrained handsome herdsmen are well constituting a picturesque grazing scene.

Touring around the Tibet, you can have an unforgettable view of the grandiose and awe-inspiring architecture of monasteries and palaces, which illustrates incontrovertibly the artistic creative genius of the industrious Tibetan people.

Ever since Buddhism was introduced to Tibet in the seventh century, for over a thousand year its influence upon the people and their culture has been profound and all embracing, though it has Tibetan zed as Lamaism. Along with the religious practice the Buddhist art has been on the upgrade. The most noteworthy achievement is the architecture of monasteries and palaces built on level land or in mountainous area on a grand scale.

In Lhasa, you can see the most majestic building in the whole of Asia, the Potala Palace. And also the Jokhang temple, the Drepung Monastery, the Sera Monastery and the Norbulingka Garden, each has a special history. Besides, many other ancient temples and scenic sites are well worth visiting.
