Nyingchi (Linzhi) Prefecture, haled as 'Tibet's Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River),' lies in the southeast of Tibet, more than 3000 meters high on average. It is adjacent to Yunan and Qamdo to the east and northeast, Naqu to the north, Lhasa to the west and Shannan to the southwest. It is a neighbor to India and Myanmar to the south with a border as long as 1,006.50 km. 

Nyingchi Prefecture covers a total area of 117,000 square km and a population of more than 140,000.  Tibetans, Monba, Lhola and other minority groups with their unique customs populate the area.  

There are 7 counties are under its jurisdiction: Nyingchi, Mainling, Gongbo'gyamda, Medog, Bome, Zaya and Nang. Bayi town, 406 kilometers east of Lhasa, is the political, economic and cultural center of Nyingchi County. It covers an area of 8 square kilometres, with a population of 16,000.

With green mountain slopes, snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear rivers, Nyingchi looks just like heaven on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The geography and human diversity make this rarely visited, sparsely populated land an ideal destination for traveling, sightseeing, scientific research and adventure. 

Nyingchi Prefecture is home to some of the greatest geographical discoveries of the 20th century: the world's largest canyon, Brahmaputra Canyon, the best preserved primeval forest in the world, Zibagou State Natural Protection Zone, Sejila and Basongcuo State Forest Parks, and Yigong State Geologic Park. All are invaluable resources for building a world-class tourism destination. 

There are two routes of touring in Nyingchi. One is Lhasa - the Basum Lake - Bayi Town - Lhasa, which passes four scenic spots of the Basum Lake, Bayi Town, the Seche La Mountain and the Burqug Lamaling. This route is good for both touring and conducting scientific investigations. The other route is Lhasa - Nyingchi - Mainling - Shannan. Along this eastern circular route one can admire natural landscapes, visit cultural and historical sites, and enjoy the folklore.
