Beijing Moves to Beat of Dutch Jazz

When most Chinese think of the Netherlands the ubiquitous windmill comes to mind. But two bands are giving Beijingers a chance to tune in to another breezy aspect of Dutch culture. Blue Summers and Saxo Panico are breathing fresh air into Dutch jazz.

Compared with other Western groups, Dutch bands are not so well known in China. But the catchy melodies and poetic lyrics are helping Dutch jazz win new fans in Beijing. Blue Summers has made a name for itself with its pop style, while Saxo Panico is better known among classical music fans. But the two groups share a common goal: to create the truly Dutch-style jazz even though the music form has its roots in the United States.

A bit of jazz, a bit of funk, some ballad rhythms mixed in for good measure. Defining their style is not so easy.

The free-spirited saxophone rifts are a highlight. From high to low, the different kinds of saxophones open up a channel to communicate with listeners. Yet their type of music really stretches the mind.

Blue Summers and Saxo Panico don't yet have global fame but their search for a universal artistic voice is sure to enhance their international appeal.
