China is shaping the administrative scheme and delimiting for the establishment of a new town in Lop Nur, a renowned wilderness in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The Lop Nur town will be under the administration of Charkhlik, the country's largest county, if the application report of establishing the town is approved by the autonomous regional government. The Lop Nur region, at the eastern edge of the Tarim Basin, is in the southeastern part of Xinjiang. The lake Lop Nur and the site of Kroraina (ancient Loulan), in the west part of Lop Nur, have drawn wide attention of Chinese and foreign scholars since early in this century. Kroraina used to be a very prosperous city along the "Silk Road " some 2,100 years ago. It has been deserted since the third century A.D. due to the ravage of windstorms and the dry climate. Following the geological exploration programs over the past decade, the Lop Nur region has gradually resumed its ancient vitality.
