The palace of Tianfei is also called the palace
of Tianhou. It was built in the 2nd year of the reign of Qingyuan
(1196), dedicated to the Lady Lin of Meizhou, Putian. She
was said to be a sea goddess, protecting seafaring vessels
and highly venerated by the people. During the Ming dynasty
when despatching officials to the countries of the South seas,
they would come here to offer sacrifices and pray. In the
Qing dynasty, when Emperor Kangxi united Taiwan, the title
of Tianfei (imperial concubine) was promoted and changed into
Tianhou (the Queen) and the temple was called the palace of
the Heavenly Queen. The palace is compact in layout and very
splendid in appearance.
