Zhonghua Road and Remin Road in downtown Shanghai forms a circular road. This road was built in the place of the dismantled old city wall. It is a landmark of the boundary of old Shanghai downtown.
The old city wall was built by Shanghai County during the Jiajing year of the Ming Dynasty (1523-1566) to guard against the pirates. After the Chinese bourgeois democratic revolution in 1911, the old city wall became an obstacle in the city's economic development and communication; the city government decided to dismantle the wall, filled up the city moat and built a road. The project was completed on July 1912 to 1914, forming the present circular road.
In the course of dismantling, a section of the wall was preserved, where the Dajing Pavilion-the Dajing Guangong Temple is located. Formerly it was an arrow tower and later the Guanggong Temple was built on it. During the Qing Dynasty the Yichun Terrace was added to it. It has now become a tourist attraction.
