The Old Bell Garden in Nanhui District was built in classic Ming style - compact and walled-in, with greenery but few flowers. Pavilions with pillars and well-carved four-arrow copings are delicately reflected in an emerald pond, forming a picture of serenity and beauty.
The Old Bell from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) is the centerpiece of the garden, which is 1.62 meters high with a circumference of 3.4 meters. Built in 1571, the bell weighs 1.6 tons and is intricately decorated. It was engraved with pictures and characters as well as the names of the 1,311 donors to ensure that their contributions would be remembered forever. The old bell is a precious heritage and serves as a graceful landmark in the Nanhui District.
In the north of the garden stands an inner garden called Wen Yuan. Halls, springs, plants, verandas and a pavilion are scattering here and there in this garden, fully embodying the spirit of the layout of the garden.
The garden was open to the public for free since 2003, and now has become a relaxing meeting place for nearby residents, especially for the elderly, to have a rest or to while away a leisurely afternoon. A growing number of old people like to gather in the garden in the early morning, to practice martial arts or walk along the stone path.
