Located on Xiaotaoyuan Street the mosque was formerly named the Western Muslim Mosque or Shanghai West City Muslim Mosque. It is next to a little peach garden ('xiaotaoyuan') in Chinese means 'little peach garden'). Its front gate faces Xiaotaoyuan Street, hence the name 'Mosque on Xiaotaoyuan Street'. Built in 1917, it is a Weat Asian Islamic architecture with four domed roofs Shanghai Municipal Islam Association is found here. The main structure of the prayer hall is a reinforced concrete. Part of its roof is a terrace. In the middle of the roof is a four-cornered 'Moon Viewing Pavilion', on top of which is hoisted a star and moon flag, a symbol of Islamism.
