The Century Avenue is located in the most prosperous and highly urbanized Lujiazui Area in Pudong. It traverses the Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone, the Bamboo Garden Business and Trade Area and the Landscaped Administrative and Cultural Center, cutting the slanting axis. The avenue extends from the exit of Yanan Road tunnel to Pudong in the west and to the Administrative and Cultural Center in the east, with a total length of 4.2-Km and a width of 100-m. The Avenue is, in the first, a sightseeing avenue and then a trunk road for traffic. The greatest feature of the avenue is its non- symmetry. The sidewalk on the north side is 44.5-m wide with 4 rows of trees and 8 Chinese botanical gardens. On the south side, the 24.5-m sidewalk is planted with 2 rows of trees. In the middle of the Avenue is a 31-m passage for vehicles with 4 driving lanes. There are altogether 2,200 trees: 700 gingkoes, 1,500 camphor trees, building the avenue into an ecological thoroughfare. The avenue has been completed and opened to traffic by the end of 1999.
