Duolun Road (originally named Doulean Road) is a small street in Shanghai. Although it is so insignificant on the map, it has its brilliance in the modern cultural history of China.
In the past century, Shanghai, having gone through the vicissitudes of history from a fishing village to a foreign domain of the '30s, has become a great metropolis in the Orient of today.
Duolun Road and its surrounding area reflect from one angle the traces of this historical course and an epitome of the history of culture. Here, the literary activities of men of letters like, Lu Xun, Maodun, Guo Moruo, Ye Shengtao and writers of the Left-wing Writers' Federation have constituted the position of Duolun Road as 'an important center of modern literature'. The well-known Gongfei Cafe (former site of Hongde Hall), residences with different styles have turned Dunlun Road into 'an open-air gallery of Shanghai architecture'. China Art Academy, Shanghai Art Theater, former residences of historical celebrities, old-fashioned neighborhoods have created a rich cultural atmosphere on today's Duolun road.
Based on the principle of development of 'restoring to the original', the humanistic style of the '20s and '30s is reproduced in its many museums, exhibition halls, antiques, calligraphy and paintings, bookshops and literary clubs, tea houses, attracting domestic and foreign visitors to cherish their memories, seeking leisure, for sightseeing and cultural activities.
