Located at eastern section of Chongming Island, covering a total area of 244.55-square-kilometer, the East Coast Nature Preserve, one of the world's few habitats for wild birds was created in 1998.
Every year, millions of migratory birds spend the winter or have a rest in the preserve during their migration along the Asia-Pacific route. Surveys have found 265 species of birds at the preserve and its precincts, among them 34 species of birds are national priority protected animals, such as the hooded crane, whistling swan and black-faced spoonbill.
The preserve is also a home to the Chinese sturgeon, one of the rare marine animals that exists in the shallow waters.
Bird-watching activities are allowed in the outer area of the preserve. Only wildlife can access into the middle and inner areas. The number of natural food resources, such as waterweed, fish and crab, is strictly monitored by conservation officials.
The central part of the island, where the Qianwei Ecology Village is based, is also a showcase of the island's ecological environment. In 1995, the village was listed as one of the World's Top 500 Ecological Villages. In addition, it was acknowledged as 'the first Ecological Agriculture Village' in Shanghai by the State Bureau of Environment Protection.
A tourist package to Qianwei Ecology Village which was launched in 1999 and involves living in farmer's houses and eating farm food, has so far attracted thousands of wannabe farmers to the village. During their stay, visitors will have a chance to test their skills on a traditional water cart, millstones, spinning wheels and looms which were used by villagers a century ago. Also, they can enjoy some seasonal specialties such as peanuts, corn and taro. The Qianwei Wetland Park is another highlight in the village. The serene setting of reed marshes stretching into the horizon has been preserved for all to enjoy. A 1,500-meter wooden bridge zigzags through the reeds to a five-story tower where visitors can overlook the entire park. Egrets, crabs and fish are all visible along the way to the tower.
