Shanghai Science and Technology Museum is a cultural center for exhibiting the development, history and research of natural science and technology from China and abroad. It is also an education center open to the public, and a landmark in Century Square in Shanghai's Pudong Development Zone.
The modern style construction of the museum began in December 1996 and was completed in March 2001. It consists of a main building, auxiliary buildings and a sunken square, covering a site area of 68,000 square meters and a total of 96,000 square meters of building area. The four floor main building is designed in a semi-circular plan.
Themed on 'nature, man and science-technology,' the museum has opened five buildings to the public - the Building of Intelligence, the Building of Creation, the Building of the Future, the Building of Life, and the Building of the Universe - as well as six exhibition areas and three IMAX 3-D large format movie houses, featuring scientific achievements in Chinese history and modern technological developments in China and abroad.
On Oct.21, 2001, APEC Ninth informal leader conference was held in the museum. It was open to the public on Dec.18, 2001.
