History

Shenyang is a famous historical city. It is the cradle of the Manchus, and started as a trading centre for nomads as farback as the 11th century, becoming established as the capital in the 17th century. With the Manchu conquest of Beijing in 1644, Shenyang became a secondary capital under the Manchu name of Mukden, and a centre of the ginseng trade.

The city was occupied by the Russians around the turn of the century as part of their 'railway colonialism', and was a key battle-ground during the Sino-Japanese War(1904-05). Shenyang rapidly changed hands-in turn dominated by warlords, the Japanese(1931), the Russians(1945), the Kuomintang(1946) and the CCCP(1948). The present population is over six million, which reflects more than a tenfold increase since 1949.
