  Ancient Rampart Discovered in Suzhou

A section of a 2,500-year old ancient rampart (a kind of wall for security purposes) was discovered recently in Suzhou, a city in east China's Jiangsu Province.

The 5-kilometer long rampart is at the western foot of Lingyan mountain to the old city of Suzhou.

Compacted layers of earth was also found, which indicates that the rampart was firmly built, said archeologists. A number of cultural relics including knives, chisels and an ax was excavated, all of which can date back to the Spring and Autumn Period (about BC 770- BC 476).

Archeologists also found that the rampart was over 20 meters wide and over four meters high, and is very important for the study of culture and history of Kingdom Wu during the Spring and Autumn period (BC 770- BC 476).
