Originally built in Tang Dynasty and reconstructed in 1382 in Ming Dynasty, Chongshan Monastery is located at Huangmiao Lane, Wuyi South Road of Taiyuan. It was ever named as White Horse Monastery, Yanshou Monastery and later Zongshan Monastery in its history.
After a fire in 1864, only the main gate, a bell tower, the main hall and two side rooms of the Monastery complex were luckily remained. The construction of the main hall is in typical Ming style. Three Buddhas are housed in the main hall, the middle one, a statue of Guanyin with a height of 8.5 meters, is the largest among them.
The monastery also boasts a rare collection of sutras written in the Song (960-1279 AD), Yuan (1271-1368 AD), Ming (1368-1644 AD) and Qing (1644-1911 AD) dynasties.
