Tianlong Mt., which means Heavenly Dragon Mt., is located 38 km away from Taiyuan city (11.5 km away from Jinci Temple). It is famous for the beautiful landscape and wonderful Buddhist caves.
Tianlong Temple, built in the Northern Qi Dynasty (A.D.560), was renamed Shengshou Temple after the Song Dynasty and includes many buildings. The Buddhist Caves are well known all over the world. There are 25 caves in the mountain. It took more than 500 years to build such a large group of caves where there were more than 500 sculptures made of stone and 1,144 carvings and pictures on the wall. They are well praised for their skillful, emotional and lively style and reflect the cave art and the evolution of caves from the Southern and Northern Dynasty to Tang Dynasty.
Cave No.9 is the biggest one and jutting out of it is a huge building made of wood called Manshan Pavilion. It is a two-storied cave. On the second floor is a big Buddha about 8 meters high. On the first floor are two Buddha riding an elephant and a lion with an eleven-faced Buddha, which is regarded as a rare well-praised stone statue made in the late Tang Dynasty, standing between them. The caves are amazing while the landscape is wonderful.
In addition, there is a large age-old pine in front of Tianlong Temple. With its outreaching branches, shaped like an umbrella, the pine shadows an area of 200 square meters. The Bailong Temple was built in the Northern Qi Dynasty. A spring flows from within and this clear spring water has become one of the most beautiful sights in Tianlong Mt. Besides all of these, there are many other relics spots, beautiful plants, wild animals and more.
