  Grand Islamic Mosque

Built in the first year (1644) under the reign of Emperor Tong Zhi and the Qing Dynasty, the Grand Islamic Mosque with a construction area of 2,200 square meters is located at No.8 Dasiqian Street north west of Xiaohuo Lane Temple, Hongqiao District.

There are more than 100,000 Muslims live in Tianjin, where more than 50 mosques have been established. The Hui, Chinese Muslim, began to reside in Tianjin in the mid-14th century during the Ming Dynasty, and by the early 20th century the population had reached 30,000, with a dozen mosques build. Today, despite the city's booming economy and social development, the Muslims still observe their traditional way of life. The area where the Muslims live in congregation is known as the Muslim Street, where there are not only mosques and Muslim restaurants, but also primary schools for Muslim children.

The mosque is an Islamic architectural complex with the palace style - The buildings'
decoration is of both primitive simplicity and elegance. The wooden carvings are finely made, and the colored drawings depicted with excellent craftsmanship. Inside and outside the mosque are hanging over 60 bian - horizontal inscribed boards and Ying-lian - couplets written on scrolls and hung on the pillars of halls, in Arabic and Chinese.

The mosque has so many bian and Ying-lian that it may be rated as the one with the most in China.
