  The Ruins of Yangshao Culture

The Ruins of Yangshao Culture In the northern suburbs of Zhengzhou lie the ruins of a primitive village of the New Stone Age - Dahecun Village that has a history of over 5000 years. The ruins cover a total area of 400,000 square metres and represent four historical periods of cultural development: the Yangshao Culture, the Longshan Culture, the Erlitou Culture and the Shang Dynasty Culture, lasting more than 3300 years.

Yangshao Culture was typical of the national culture in the Yellow River valley. Yangshao Cultural Ruins was named after Yangshao because it was discovered in Yangshao Village, Mianchi County, Sanmenxia City in 1921. Yangshao Cultural Ruins is encircled by the Yinniu River on the eastern, western and southern sides and the Mt. Shaoshan on the northern side, and covers an area of 300 thousand square meters with its cultural layer being up to 4 meters deep.
In 1951, the Archaeological Research Institute of China Academy of Sciences conducted a small excavation of the Ruins, and found that there are four laminated cultural layers, which are the Middle Yangshao Culture-Late Yangshao Culture-Early Longshan-Middle Longshan Culture from bottom to top. The cultural phenomena characterized by ceramics decorated with colored drawings was first discovered in Yangshao Village, after which it is named 'Yangshao Culture', making Yangshao Cultural Ruins well known at home and abroad. The State Council designated Yangshao Cultural Ruins as a key state relic unit under protection in March 1961. The Museum of Chinese History organized Chinese, American, English and Japanese archaeologists to carry out an international field cultural relic investigation in 1994, when they discovered numerous precious cultural relics in Bancun Village near Yangshao Village, including the most valuable tens of jin of millet dating back to 5000 years ago, indicating China's long history of agricultural development.
